Custom Batch Oven with Load Car
LEWCO, Inc. recently delivered a 500°F. electric batch oven to a large multi-national industrial customer. The oven is used for precise pre-heating motor components, some weighing up to 8500 lbs., as part of a shrink fit assembly procedure.
The oven was unique in that it had to be designed to fit into limited space which did not permit the use of traditional industrial oven load car designs. Also, the area in front of the oven had to remain clear when the load car was in the oven and the overall height of the guillotine door frame was restricted.
LEWCO’s design team developed a solution that featured a single, side mounted pneumatic cylinder to power the car. The car has bulkhead seals on the front and back which allowed the guillotine door to be shorter. The bulkhead seal on the rear of the car allows the door to close and seal while the car is being outside the oven thereby conserving energy and reducing recovery time.
The oven is controlled by a 10” Operator Interface Terminal (OIT) employing LEWCO’s proprietary software on a Honeywell HC900 platform. The system has complete control functionality including system status, recipe creation and maintenance, data logging, and maintenance screens. The control system also supports remote communications and troubleshooting via the internet.
